What is golden hour?

Golden hour is the short period of low, warm sunlight around sunrise and sunset. Its name is useful shorthand, but its actual length is set by astronomy rather than the clock.

Warm light at the edge of the day

When the sun is close to the horizon, its light travels through more of the atmosphere than it does at midday. Shorter blue wavelengths are scattered more strongly, leaving a warmer balance of yellows, oranges and reds in the direct light. Because the source is low, buildings, trees and people cast longer shadows. Texture becomes more visible, and a scene can gain depth without the hard overhead contrast of noon.

Photographers use morning golden hour for quiet streets, cleaner air and the transition out of dawn. Evening golden hour often brings more activity, lingering warmth in the landscape and a sequence that continues through sunset into blue hour. Neither is automatically better. The useful window depends on the subject, weather, horizon and the direction the scene faces.

The definitions used by this site

Golden Hour City calculates solar events from geographic coordinates and a local calendar date. Morning golden hour begins at sunrise, when the sun’s upper edge appears at the horizon under the standard atmospheric-refraction definition, and ends when the sun reaches 6° above the horizon. Evening golden hour begins as the sun descends through 6° and ends at sunset.

For the blue-hour tables, this site uses the cooler part of twilight between 12° and 6° below the horizon. In the morning that window runs from −12° to −6° before sunrise; in the evening it runs from −6° to −12° after sunset. These are consistent calculation boundaries, not a promise that the sky will look blue: cloud, haze, artificial light and exposure choice all affect the photograph.

Why golden hour is not always an hour

The sun crosses the horizon at different angles around the world. Near the equator it tends to rise and set steeply, so it passes through the low-elevation band quickly. At higher latitudes the path can be shallower, stretching warm light and twilight for much longer. The angle also changes through the year because Earth’s axis is tilted.

Compare near-equatorial Singapore with northern Reykjavik. Singapore’s day length varies little and twilight is comparatively quick. Reykjavik moves between very short winter days and summer nights that never become fully dark. Cities such as London and Sydney fall between those extremes, with opposite seasons.

Practical photography tips

Start with direction, not only time. A sunrise or sunset bearing shows where the sun will meet the horizon, helping you decide whether the light will strike a façade, sit behind a skyline or skim across water. Arrive before the listed window so you can inspect foregrounds, simplify the edges of the frame and change position without rushing.

Protect highlight detail when the sun is in the frame. A small negative exposure adjustment or a bracketed sequence can preserve bright sky while retaining shadow information. When the sun is behind you, look for warm reflected light on stone and glass. With side light, use the long shadows to reveal shape. After sunset, keep shooting: the balance between cool ambient light and city illumination often improves during blue hour.

The calculated time describes the sun at a city coordinate, not guaranteed visible light at every viewpoint. Mountains, buildings and local terrain can hide the geometric horizon; weather can remove direct sunlight entirely. Treat the schedule as a planning baseline, then read the actual scene.
